Image: Enki’s Waterfall, web collage by my longtime friend, Dana Hunt. She has created many wonderful images for me to use over the last dozen years. This one of Enki, using images from Sumerian myth and whimsical mermaids and stars, is particularly appropriate for this New Moon.

A New Moon at the very beginning edge of a sign is a new moon indeed. This one is barely across the “line” from Capricorn into Aquarius. It is fun to play with images for the cusps between signs that fuse the two classic symbols. My favorite for the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp is the Sumerian god, Enki (as longterm Cosmic News readers may remember). This earthy god stands with one foot on a (Capricorn) mountain. Rivulets of water (Aquarius) cascade from his shoulders, like mountains streams flowing into the valleys. That’s how I see it. Or, perhaps (you tell me), he radiates electromagnetic fields. The geometry of the symbol for Aquarius seems to indicate electrical waves as well as water. Indeed this sign has electrical, lightning, enlightening effects. Will this New Moon bring more of these currents into our atmosphere?

MERCURY and VENUS are also in Aquarius, a very friendly planetary combination exuding a benevolent quality of love. There are many types of love and many words for it. In Greek four particular words are used.

EROS, romantic love, is associated with sexual desire and passion. On another level of resonance, it can refer to the soul’s love of beauty and compelling attraction to its spiritual origin.

STORGE, affection, is familial love, a natural love arising from family bonds and daily familiarity.

The next two words bring us into the territory of Aquarian-style love.

PHILIA means “affectionate regard, friendship. It is a dispassionate love, commonly expressed as loyalty to friends and lovers, family, and community, involving virtue, equality, and familiarity, enjoying shared experience.

AGAPE is a love fest, love for the sake of love, as in brotherly love, good will and benevolence. Sometimes called charity, it embodies unconditional love and a non-possessive openness of heart, the love of God for man and of man for God. Mystic Thomas Aquinas called it “to will the good of another.”

C.S. Lewis, who wrote the Narnia books, also wrote adult fiction and commentary on Christianity, amplifies these definitions in his book, THE FOUR LOVES. A thoughtful summary that gives you lots to chew on is found on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Four_Loves.

Community, social networks, cultural issues, news of note all take our attention under so much Aquarian energy. Venus and Jupiter oppose each other in Aquarius/Leo respectively, tending toward extravagance and emotional drama, but also creative exultation. Imagine being an artist in front of a blank canvas. Choose your palette of colors and start applying the paint! On another level, consider your role in the various social settings of your life. You may rethink what (and who) you enjoy engaging with.

Buckminster Fuller, 1895-1983, offers inspiration to take to heart in this New Moon cycle. Although not an Aquarian, he had a generous and wildly creative mind put to the service of humanity. His personal goal: “To make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest amount of time through spontaneous cooperation and without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone.” His study of “nature’s coordinate system” which he called Synergetics, brings resonant energies together, so that the sum is greater than the parts. He applied with natural geometries that enhance the environment. He named his original methodology “Comprehensive Anticipatory Design Science”: start with wholeness (comprehensive), consider the future needs and ideal state (anticipatory), involve creative strategies (design), and utilize empirical data (science).

This is all great mind food to foster under this New Moon, with potential to advance the overarching Uranus-Pluto necessity to invent new designs and models that harmonize with basic geometries and cycles of Nature.

An active trio of NEPTUNE, MARS and CHIRON in PISCES may give us pause, as we wrestle with “reality” and what we believe is possible or not. Faith and philosophy are rubbing up against ingrained core beliefs that tend to limit our experience, depress and suppress our dreams and visions. Sensitivity is at high tide, so don’t expect a lot of yourself. Be careful not to overdo addictive indulgences, which may not be the best choice if you are seeking a solution to free your mind. Your soul calls and may need some quiet time to feel out where you stand with the current intensity of transformation.

Unplug from media that tells of war and strife. Turn your channel to uplifting and inspirational possibilities. In other words, clap for Tinkerbelle and join the SIXTIES singalong: “Smile on your brother, everybody get together, and love one another right now.” Positive thinking has real effects that ripple through the universe, like the wings of a butterfly, a quantum method of voting for the story you want to be living. Spacetime wormholes open up like Alice’s looking glass. Many of us are surfing the same waves. Some profoundly unexpected and globe-changing initiative, perhaps a social movement or a big storm, bursts forth from the collective consciousness like fireworks. Believe it and aim your arrows of intention.

MERCURY in AQUARIUS turns retrograde tomorrow, giving us extra time to gain perspective, join with others on the same track, and use our collective intelligence to will the good of all. From January 21-February 11, the cosmic switchboard operator will be connecting and reconnecting myriads of communications grids in the sea of agape and philia.
